The Benefits of Solar Panels

Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular across North Devon. It’s not just about clean energy anymore; it’s just as much about energy independence.

Sustainable Energy

Using solar lowers your home’s carbon footprint and allows your family to use clean electricity.

Cheaper Electricity

As energy costs continue to skyrocket, solar panels and batteries allow you to produce your own electricity, drastically reducing your bills.

Backup Power Source

With solar panels and a solar battery, you can continue to power essential circuits if the grid experiences a power cut.

North Devon Solar Panels FAQs

While it might not always feel like it, North Devon enjoys some of the best weather anywhere in the UK. Thanks to the North Devon coast, not only is it generally milder here than in most of the UK, but we also enjoy less cloud cover, with coastal areas getting around 1,600 sunshine hours per year (compared to around 1,400 for cities like London).

Increased sunshine can make solar panels particularly useful in North Devon. However, there are a lot of other factors to consider before deciding whether the investment is right for you. Here are some common questions we get asked that might help you make up your mind.

How Do I Know if Solar Panels Are Suitable for My Home?

There are a few factors that determine whether your home is suited to solar panels, which is why companies like us will always assess your home in detail before offering a final quote.

Essentially, it all boils down to one question: Is there enough space on your property for solar panels to produce enough electricity compared to how much you use currently?

Most solar panels go on a property’s roof, so the roof’s space, orientation and shading need to be considered. However, if you own a large rural property you may also be able to install freestanding solar panels in areas like fields, gardens and banks.

Beyond that, we also need to know your current energy usage, as there’s no point in splashing out on solar panels if they don’t produce enough power for your needs. You can usually find info on your current usage through your energy provider’s online dashboard if you have one set up, or your utility bill.

The more information you can provide when filling out our quote request form, the faster we can get a quote put together for you. However, if you’re unsure of any details, just let us know as much as you can, and we’ll be in touch to help with the rest.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in North Devon?

The price of a solar panel installation can vary wildly. Just some of the factors that influence the cost include:

  • Roof type

  • Ease of access to the roof

  • Your current electrical system and how easy it will be to connect to your solar panels.

This is why we carry out a free site survey before agreeing to any work, so we can look at all this and things like shading, the strength of the roof and your electricity usage. All our no-obligation proposals are sent with site-specific information so you can be confident you’re getting the best price.

That being said, here is what you can usually expect to pay for a solar panel installation in North Devon by us at GMEC:

Panels*
Estimated Energy Generation
Estimated Cost
12 x 485w panels (5.8kw)
5600 – 6000kwh
£6,100
9 x 485w panels (4.3kw)
4100 – 4500kwh
£5,375
7 x 485w panels (3.3kw)
3100 – 3500kwh
£4,125

*Other numbers of panels can be fitted depending on your needs.

Please note that these figures are for guidance only and are based on a south-facing roof at a 30-degree angle. Scaffolding is a common additional cost, while battery storage is another optional expense that can cost anywhere from £3,000 to £6,000.

As a proud local solar company, we’re committed to finding the best price solutions for homes across North Devon. If you’ve had a quote from elsewhere, feel free to let us know, and we’ll see what other options you could have with us.

How Long Does it Take to Install Solar Panels on a Home?

Again, the amount of time it takes to go from enquiry to installation can depend on a lot of factors, the main one being how big your system is going to be.

Most residential systems don’t require a G99 application, which basically tells the grid you will be producing electricity. However, larger projects may require this, which can take a few months to get signed off.

Once we’ve agreed on the right solar solution for you and got any necessary applications signed off, the actual installation usually only takes 1-2 days, depending on its complexity.

If you have any further questions about solar panel installations in North Devon, feel free to contact our team directly. Otherwise, tell us as much as you can about your situation through our quote form, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
