Battery storage for your solar PV is here, and will change the way you use your generated electricity from your solar panels forever.
Currently your solar panels produce DC electricity which goes through the inverter and is changed to AC power which is used in the home. During the day any power you produce is then used to power the home. Unused power is then exported to the grid earning you a feed in tariff.
When your solar system isn’t producing power you buy all your electricity back from the grid.
Having a battery storage system will change all this
The power produced from the Solar PV System will still power your home as normal but any unused power be used to charge the battery storage. Once this is full, any other unused electric will be sent back to the grid. The ultimate goal is to not export any, but to store it all making your home as self-sufficient as possible.
Once the battery storage is full it’s now ready for use in your home, be it day or night.
This means that you will now use more of the power produced from the Solar PV System and buy less from the grid thus saving you more money. The grid is still important because once your battery is discharged you will then use power from the grid. This all depends on how heavy an electric user your house hold is.
Some battery storage system can offer you EPS (emergency power supplies). If you are in an area that suffers a lot of power cuts then this is something that’s worth looking at although it won’t power the whole house it can power dedicated circuits for a short time. For instance it could be used to power some lighting, power fridges and even more important in the winter months power the boiler and bore hole water pump.
AC battery storage
This is new technology that works the same as the above system but you don’t necessarily need to have solar PV. If you have a property where you can’t have Solar PV or don’t like it then this could be an option for you. It’s connected to the off peak supply /economy 7, 10 and you can charge the battery over night when the electric is cheaper and use it during the day, another clever way of saving electric and money.
